It was in the year 1905 that the first pizzeria in America was born. An Italian immigrant by the name of Gennaro Lombardi opened the first pizzeria in lower Manhattan's little Italy out of his grocery store, known as Lombardi's.
Back then, a whole pie sold for a nickel. However, as many could not afford a whole pie, Lombardi also sold slices, the size of which depended on how much the customer could spare.
